The Legacy of Youtube
Youtube has become the most prominent and most popular video distribution service on the internet today. It is a space for anyone to create, share original videos, without restriction, for billions to view. Since its founding in February 2005, Youtube has grown immensely in numbers. There are over 2 billion active monthly users and more than 50 million content creators. To date, there is an average of 5 billion videos posted and roughly 5 billion videos are watched daily. Additionally, the platform is available in 100 countries in 80 languages. The diversity of creators and content is endless.
Youtube's origins were in a makeshift office in a garage and were formed by Chad Hurley, Steven Chen, and Jawed Karim, who were all former employees of Paypal. It began as an angel-funded enterprise, which means they funded their own company, and the idea was devised at a dinner party when the trio was discussing the difficulty of finding, watching, and sharing video clips online. May 2005 was when the beta version of Youtube was on the internet and by the next month the very first video, "Me at the Zoo", was posted. The 19-second clip was published by Karim and featured him at the San Diego zoo. The first one-million video was a Nike ad in September 2005 and since then, the business continued to expand.
The creation of Youtube has even created new professions, which is very profitable for many. Youtube's Partner Program and Google's AdSense enables anyone to have a successful career as a YouTuber. Currently, there are over 2,000 employees and billions of dollars worth of investments have been put into the company. The program has been very influential to media, business, politics, and everyday life. Whether its news, marketing/advertising, campaigning, or entertainment, the possibilities of sharing are infinite. Anyone and everyone can post opinions in an effective, mass media way and become viral instantaneously.
